Are pediatric dentists qualified to care for kids with special needs?

During dental school, students learn how to care for patients of all ages and all different backgrounds. If a dentist wants to become a pediatric dentist, they must complete additional training post-graduation to learn how to care for the unique needs of children. It’s during this training that dentists also learn how to work with patients who have special needs. In fact, some patients with special needs continue visiting their pediatric dentist as adults because of how educated and capable they are. No matter what your child needs—our team is here for you!

How can I help my child maintain positive oral health?

It can be difficult to get kids interested in taking care of their teeth, but there are a few things you can try. Playing a fun song that lasts for about two minutes can help make teeth brushing a fun part of their daily routine. It can also help to use a sticker chart or explain to them that they have “sugar monsters” on their teeth, and the only way to fight them off is by brushing and flossing. Our team can also talk with your child about the importance of dental care, and regular cleanings, sealants, and fluoride treatments can help reduce their risk of tooth decay and gum disease significantly as well.

How can I help my child feel more comfortable at the dentist?

Before your child comes in for their first dental appointment, you are welcome to bring them by for a quick tour of our practice and have them meet our team so that they can start to become familiar with our office. They may also want to bring a favorite toy or stuffed animal with them to hold during their visit, and we have TVs and movie glasses available to help take their mind off of their treatment as well. Our office also provides several choices for dental sedation, which can help ease their anxiety and help them stay still in the dental chair.
