What Are Dental Sealants?

July 31, 2021 10:05 pm

Dental sealants are a preventive dental treatment that can help prevent tooth decay. They are a plastic coating applied to the natural grooves and crevices on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. While these nooks and crannies on the surface of teeth are completely natural, bacteria and food particles are prone to getting stuck in them. Having a physical barrier against bacteria and food debris protects these deep crevices from decay.

How Are They Applied?

Dental sealants are one of the quickest and easiest preventive treatments available. Typically dental sealants are applied after your child’s dental cleaning is complete. After their routine cleaning, the dentist will apply a thin layer of bonding over the tooth’s surface followed by the sealant. The sealant is easily brushed onto the tooth and then cured with a blue light. After the sealant is placed on the tooth, kids can go about their day as normal. Sealants don’t require any upkeep besides normal brushing until they need to be replaced.

Benefits of Dental Sealants

Sealants offer many benefits for kids and adults alike, such as:

  • Cost-effective preventive treatment
  • Long-lasting protection from cavities
  • No additional maintenance
  • Quick and easy to apply
