Should I Brush My Child’s Baby Teeth?

January 27, 2022 8:34 am

Even though baby teeth are temporary, they play a very important role in your child’s health and development. Your child’s very first teeth pave the way for their forever smile. Baby teeth help your child eat and communicate early on. Additionally, they act as placeholders for their adult teeth to grow in properly and help them develop strong, aligned jaws. When baby teeth fall out prematurely due to neglect or decay, this can lead to overcrowding and bite issues.

How to Care for Baby Teeth

From the moment your baby’s very first tooth erupts, it’s time to take care of their teeth. You can begin your child’s oral care routine by gently cleaning their teeth and gums with a wet washcloth, then gradually acclimating them to a child toothbrush and toothpaste. Children under 3 years old only need a dab of toothpaste the size of a grain of rice. Children over 3 years old only need a pea-sized amount.

Because the needs and routines around caring for baby teeth change so rapidly, we recommend taking your child to the dentist twice a year soon after their first tooth erupts for professional examinations. Your child’s dentist can help determine if their baby teeth are healthy and growing normally, and if there is anything you need to adjust regarding your child’s oral health habits.
