If your child is feeling particularly nervous or scared, we can recommend dental sedation. We offer nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation in our office and general anesthesia at a nearby hospital.

How You Can Help Your Child Feel More Comfortable About the Dentist

As a parent or caregiver, you can help your child prepare for their dental visit.

First, teach your child good oral hygiene and oral health habits by setting a positive example. Let them see you brush and floss your own teeth. Eat balanced meals together, including tooth-healthy snacks. Drink plenty of water and avoid tobacco products.

Additionally, discuss with your child the importance of both at-home oral healthcare and routine visits to the dentist. Use age-appropriate explanations, pictures, and videos. There are many children’s books that can jumpstart and guide your discussion, such as:

  • The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist by Stan & Jan Berenstain
  • Curious George Visits the Dentist by H. A. Rey
  • ABC Dentist: Healthy Teeth From A to Z by Harriet Ziefert
  • The Crocodile and the Dentist by Taro Gomi
  • What to Expect When You Go to the Dentist by Heidi Murkoff
  • Just Going to the Dentist by Mercer Mayer
  • The Tooth Book by Dr. Seuss
