Are Dental Sealants Right for My Child?
August 27, 2021 1:52 amDental sealants are a great option to help protect your child’s molars (their back teeth) from tooth decay. Let’s take a look at how they work and how to know if they’re the right option for your child.
What Is a Cavity?
A cavity is permanent tooth damage due to decay. It is a small hole that forms on the surface of teeth and can extend through all its layers. Poor oral hygiene and a diet high in sugar contribute to a buildup of plaque, which is bacteria that bands together into a sticky film on the surface of teeth. This plaque produces acids that erode and weaken enamel, making it more prone to decay and damage. Enamel can also be weakened by an acidic diet and aggressive toothbrushing.
What Is a Dental Sealant?
Dental sealants are made from a special plastic compound and tooth-colored ceramic. They fill in the deep grooves of the back teeth to make them easier to keep clean. This barrier helps protect the teeth from trapping bacteria and food particles in these grooves. Sealants can last for years and be replaced easily if they become worn down.
Getting a dental sealant is a fast and pain-free procedure. First, we will clean and dry your child’s tooth to prepare it for treatment. We will then apply an etching gel to the tooth. Once the tooth is properly prepared by the etching gel, we can apply the sealant material into the grooves and allow it to harden. And that’s it!
